After 13 years with the NYPD I left to go full time in Network Marketing since I was making more money in a week with my part time MLM business than what I was making as a full time cop.

Sure enough, less than 2 years later that company went out of business. That was over 25 years ago.

Since then, it’s been quite a journey.

From being a Regional Vice President (RVP) of A.L. Williams (now known as Primerica) to becoming President of Nutramerica (flagship product -  TrimSpa), to now being Master Distributor of TraVista Worldwide.

I am not an expert Blogger, Internet Marketer, Social Networker or Video Marketer. What I do know is what it takes to win in the MLM Home business arena… and that’s why I started this blog after many years of procrastination.

Over 25 year in this industry, I now find myself in the learning mode. I always prided myself of being a master recruiter. Several times I have recruited 20 – 30 people within a month’s time… and I did it the old fashion way of picking up the phone.

Now don’t get me wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with picking up the phone, and I will continue to do it as long as I am growing my MLM business. However, I soon realized that if you are not taking advantage of what the Internet has to offer, then you are leaving much on the table and not maximizing your business and income potential.

So here I am over 25 years later, and I now find myself as a student…
– doing “whatever it takes” to grow my MLM business.

Because I consider myself a professional network marketer. I have an entrepreneurial mind set. I treat my MLM business as a business. I know what it take to win and succeed…

… and yet still there were times that even I who knows better, made the mistake of participating in some really bad programs. Maybe not as bad as the above headlines above, but still, I have made decisions from time to time to put my time and efforts into something that deep in my heart I knew would be a mistake.

I am quite embarrassed to even write this article.

But, here’s what is even more sad.

First and foremost… I took my time and efforts away from making money from my MLM business.

2nd… I cost others to lose their time and money.

3rd… I lost credibility.

So, the next time you open your email box, and you see the next greatest and latest program to give you riches beyond your belief … and you will see them – because there are literally hundreds popping up every week…

… then please ask yourself these 3 questions…

1. Will it last?

2. Will others most likely make money or lose money?

3. Will this take me away from making money with my MLM business?

We’ve all made mistakes. However, once we recognize those mistakes, now it is our responsibility not to repeat them.

MLM Is A Business, But Unfortunately,
Most Don’t Treat It As Such.

Why is it? Why do so network marketers many fail?

Actually, there are a dozens of contributing factors. However, to keep this article short, I’ll just go over a few. I will then give you the REAL REASON WHY most fail…  and if this describes you, then you may have a serious decision to make.

It’s The Comp Plan – some compensation plans are doomed for failure, which I will leave for another article.

It’s The Company – you can’t argue that. It could be poor management, overpriced bad product, or they simply go out of business, which happens far too often.

It’s Your Upline - no doubt, poor leadership with little help and direction doesn’t help.

It’s The System – absolutely it’s the system. If you don’t have a good recruiting/marketing system that does the selling, the persuading and the convincing for you… you are doomed for failure… right? Not really.

There are more, but I’ll leave it at just those 4 for now. You got the idea.

… and if you’ve been in this crazy MLM – Network Marketing business, even for as little as 6 months, I am sure you can relate.

No doubt, finding the right company with rock solid leadership, a compensation plan that rewards you for your efforts and super rewards you for building a team… and having a product that you would want for yourself whether there was a good compensation plan attached to it or not, would be a great find.

Finding such a company would be like hitting a home run. And if that company also has a recruiting system in place… heck, you might of just hit a grand slam.

Now you don’t have to quit. Right?

After all, you just found that perfect company… and you even have a great upline too.  So why quit?

I am not saying that you should quit, but what I am saying is that unfortunately the majority of you that are reading this article have no business being in business.

#1 Reason WHY You Should Quit Your MLM Business Now & Spare Yourself The Heartaches.

You are not willing to do whatever it takes to win.

You are simply not willing to do the things that others are willing to do in order to succeed. Yes, bad companies and bad comp plans can cause you to fail… but only temporarily. It’s still up to you to succeed in the long run.

Of course, I don’t want you to give up on your dreams.

I can safely say that I have enjoyed more success and experienced the most awfully dreaded failures than over 90% of the people in the MLM industry. I’ve been around a very long time. I have recruited hundreds of people… and I have seen this common trait in most of those that I have recruited. No matter how much leadership and training I provided them or how great our recruiting system was… I knew within less than a week that these people were going to fail. In fact most of them, never even tried.

And the ones that did give it a try… it was so obvious from our conversations that they were never 100% TOTALLY COMMITTED… to the business.

They just were not willing to do…  whatever it takes to win!

They never treated their MLM business… as a business.
They looked for every excuse why it won’t work.
They blamed everybody else but themselves.
They literally put ZERO effort.
They simply had a bad attitude.

Some of you may be saying… “that’s not me”. Then that’s great… DON’T QUIT!

I wrote this article back in July 1998 when I was
President of Nutramerica. In the article I replaced
“Nutramerica” with “your MLM business”.

While the recent celebration of our nation’s independence still rings fresh in our minds and hearts, I thought it would be very fitting to talk to you this month about freedom.

What does the word freedom mean to you?

To our forefathers, it was a very simple concept, yet deadly serious because they literally put their lives and fortunes on the line. To them, it was about not having government (especially a foreign government) tell us how we should live our lives. It was about WE THE PEOPLE. It was about having the right and freedom to worship our God, raise our children and pursue happiness with absolutely no government intrusion.

But how many of you have ever taken the time to truly appreciate the sacrifices that others have made to ensure this privilege? Our forefathers took tremendous risks and responsibility in the pursuit of freedom; many, in fact, have given their very lives.

Now my purpose in this article is not to give you an American History lesson (not exactly my best subject). However, I do hope that you took some  time this past 4th of July to reflect on “what if…”

What if… our forefathers did not take their responsibilities seriously?

What if… they had taken a casual attitude?

What if… they weren’t totally committed to the idea of freedom?

Would we Americans have the freedoms and opportunities we now enjoy today?

Allow me to take this one step further. What if you do not take your MLM business seriously? What if instead, you take a casual attitude towards your responsibility? What if you never really make that total commitment that you are willing to do whatever it takes to make your MLM business a success? What would be the consequences of your actions?

What freedoms are you looking for as a result of building a successful MLM business?

* Is it the freedom to get out of that dead end job?
* Is it the freedom to spend more time with your family?
* Is it to pursue your passion or purpose in life?

Honestly, how great would it be to wake up every morning knowing that you have total control of your life?

Never having to answer to no one but your God (and spouse of course, if applies). To know that each and every day you are in pursuit of your cherished dreams, and each and every day brings you one day closer to achieving them; to know that you’d never have to make a decision based on “can I afford it?” ever again; to never have to answer to a boss, punch a clock, or meet a deadline that will make someone else rich. To live life to the fullest.

Now that’s freedom!

But with these fantastic freedoms comes a price… and it’s called “taking responsibility”. How committed are your goals and dreams? How committed are you to the success of your MLM business? And most importantly, how committed are you to actually living the lifestyle, you know deep in your heart, you desire for your family?

With Freedom… Comes Responsibility, and with Responsibility… Comes Action!

Whether it’s about making sales from a live presentation, or converting traffic into opt-ins or sales… the Law of Averages works 100% of the time.

The Law Of Averages is simple math. Although it can apply to every part of your life, for the purpose of this article, we will focus on sales and marketing.

The Law of Averages will simply give you the results of a particular action  over a period of time. It’s like a batting average. The 300 hitter gets a hit 3 times every 10 times he goes to bat… as an average. Sometimes, he’ll go 0 for 10, and then sometimes he he’ll go 6 for 10, but over the course of the season he will average 3 hits for every 10 at bats.

Now let’s give another example of an insurance sales person. Let’s say after a 3 month period the sales person gives 100 sales presentations, and as a result of those 100 presentations, 40 sales were made. So that means every 10 presentations will result in 4 sales. Let’s break it down even further. Every 5 presentations will result in 2 sales.

Why is it important to know the Law Of Averages?

There are several reasons, but most importantly, it gives you the ability to better manage your activity. It also gives confidence to get you through a slump. For example, one week you gave 10 presentations and instead of getting your average 4 sales, you only get one sale.

It also tells you how much money you make per sales presentation, versus how much money you make per sale. This is AWESOME, so listen up. Let’s stay with the 4 sales out of every 10 presentations example. Let’s also say that the average commission per sale is $400. So that means after the 10 presentations the 4 sales will make $1600 in commissions… $400 times the 4 sales.

Now you take that $1600 in commissions and divide it by the number of presentations which is 10 and you come up with $160 a presentation. How cool is that. Whether you make the sale or not, YOU KNOW that every presentation you give will make you on $160… on “average”.

You MUST KNOW Your Law Of Averages

If you are presently marketing on line and spending money on getting traffic to your website and this Law of Average thing is new to you, then get prepared to get blown away. In fact, if you are familiar with CPA offers, whereby a company will pay $35 to an affiliate to get them a customer that will only pay a $4.95 Shipping & Handling charge to try their product. Why would a company pay a $35 commission, barely cover their shipping and handling costs and give way free product to boot, without know if that new customer will ever order with them again?

Why? Because they know their Law of Averages. They know ahead of time, how many of those trial offers will continue to order from them and they also know the long term value of their customers over a period of time.

Are you in Network Marketing or MLM?

If you are presently working a network marketing company or MLM opportunity, and you have a good capture page that will create enough interest for a prospect to give you their information so they can “opt-in” for more information on your opportunity, do you presently know what the maximum amount of money you can spend to get that prospect to your capture page and still profit?

KNOWING THIS INFORMATION IS IMPERATIVE TO YOUR SUCCESS

Note: this article is not about increasing or improving conversions, but it’s worth mentioning that tracking and improving conversions is an ongoing practice. Changing just one word in a headline on a capture page can increase your conversions by as much as 300%.

OK, let’s do the math.

Let’s say that your capture page has a 20% opt-in rate. That means for every 100 visitors that comes to your website give you their information to find out more about your opportunity. Let’s also say that for every 20 opt-ins you get one sign up. Ok that’s pretty cool so far.

Note: You also need to track your law of average with different types of traffic. Traffic Exchanges and Safelists will not perform as well as Pay Per Click or other forms of targeted paid traffic.

Now let’s say that for every sign up you make $100.

This is where the fun begins. Here’s what we have so far… 100 visitors = 20 opt-ins = 1 sign up = $100. There are 2 Law of Averages you can come away with.

1. Each visitor makes you $1.00 or

2. Every opt-in makes you $5.00.

So now the next question you should ask yourself is how much money are you willing to spend to get that same type of traffic to your website repeatedly. Of course your marketing budget and how much money you are willing to risk always has a lot to do with the decision you come up with. You also need to ask yourself if breaking even is OK with you, or do you need to make a profit, and again this depends on your financial situation and your marketing budget.

Let me further explain.

Do you remember the example we mentioned earlier where a company will pay an affiliate $35 to get a customer that only spend $4.95 for shipping and gets the product for free? We now know why they willing to take that risk, and that’s because they know the long term value of their customers. They know in the long run, they will get a percentage of those customers to continue to order with them, thus giving them a profit.

What is the long term value of a brand new rep?

Note: Of course, if you are just starting out this information is not readily available to you. Hopefully, your upline leader may be able to help you with a starting point, but of course his or her’s Law of Average will be different from yours. This is where discipline and tracking comes in on your part.

If you are just starting out, you may not know this information, then you may want to be a little bit more conservative in determining how much money you are willing to spend for a visitor or an opt-in.

Tracking your results can be fun.

This may seem like a lot of work, but I promise you it’s not and it can actually be a lot of fun to track your results to determine what your law of averages are. I can assure you that once know your law of averages it can get pretty exciting… and very lucrative.
